The band’s new website exists now. It’s still rough in some spots, but I had the initial rollout of the band board functions to band members tonight. Generally it’s going well. There’s some sort of problem that makes the site render pretty slowly, especially on longer pages. Any ideas? (Try scrolling on the about page for an example).
I’m still trying to figure out an elusive bug some people have been reliably having: they have to log in twice to get in. They claim it happens every time, but I can’t seem to reproduce it (even using windows and IE). I had them try different browsers and it had the same behavior. Very odd.
There’s a fair amount of code cleanup to do, as some of the content was pasted out of the old site, and some of the heavily modified phpbb templates are more table-heavy than they need to be.
It’s a step in the right direction though. Let me know what you think or if you have ideas as how to fix these problems.
Random rant:
I hate it when business majors defend their school by stating that they make more than engineers (or whoever) after graduation. I honestly don’t have any problem with this being true, but I would be very embarrassed if that were the selling point for my major.
The worst thing is, I have two options when someone says something like that: don’t say anything or say things that are very mean. I usually take the former. It bothers me because a) their statement suggests that their path is somehow better because of the money, and b) ‘everyone else’ wouldn’t cut it in business school. If b) isn’t being implied, then the speaker is only bragging about choosing a major, not even making it through.
Honestly, I wouldn’t take a business major’s job for twice what they get paid. Last spring, someone told me that I should go into nursing because there isn’t any money in computers… completely missing the point. As long as I can support myself, it’s irrelevant.
When computer science was (among) the top earning majors out of school, it attracted lots of people who didn’t really have a passion nor aptitude for it, and created a lot of bad computer scientists. I guess in that respect, I’m glad computer science isn’t a hot field like it used to be.
Disclaimers:
This is NOT a rant against business majors, nor even people who say things like this, it’s a general rant against that school of thought.
I added a syndicated xanga feed for
I worked on marching97.org for a while tonight… it’s going well. I hope to roll out the site to the band on Wednesday, and alumni after the dust has settled on that.
Lots of stuff will be missing or incomplete for the initial rollout, but the messaging portion seems to work well so far. I’ve learned a lot while hacking phpbb in the last few weeks (none of which merits writing about here, since it’s extremely dry for the most part).
I had a pretty good weekend… spent a fair amount of time being social, ran every day, and did a relatively large amount of cooking. I really enjoyed cooking this weekend, my manicotti came out quite good, especially considering it’s the first time I’d made it. The oatmeal cookies were great, especially the ones with chocolate chips, butterscotch, and coconut. Having the long weekend is nice because it affords me time for things like that. Once the football season starts, that’ll be less frequent, but I expect it’ll continue to happen on some level.
Our dishwasher is broken, hopefully it’ll be back up and running soon… we’ve been so pampered by it.
I’ll write a bit about my classes once I feel like it, I haven’t quite figured them out yet.
I had a good workout today… the run was pretty long (through north bethlehem and along the canal) and quite hot (the bridge claimed it was 93, but that’s an exaggeration, I think). Mmm.. lactic acid.
Now I’m going to try to get some work done on the marching band site.
Speaking of band, I happened to run by Moravian’s band today and heard their drum line. It’s good music for running.
I’m ridiculously excited about the movie “Hero”. It’s based in a similar fantasy world to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which is one of my favorite movies. Hopefully I’ll get to see it this afternoon.
I really want to uninstall flash from my computer. Can anyone think of a good reason why I shouldn’t? The flash ads are getting annoying and I usually have about a dozen web pages open at any one time.
And no, I don’t read homestar runner.
