This summer is passing by without me noticing.
I guess this is the first time in as long as I can remember where summer didn’t bring some sort of different activity, whether that’s a job, camp, or music. This is just more of the same with better weather I haven’t been able to enjoy that much. I did get to go rafting with the book search engineering team on Tuesday, which was fun. The rapids were pretty mild, but they were strong enough to be fun, so I didn’t care too much. I learned that thinking about the Bernoulli effect will make you row on the wrong side of the raft.
Family and some friends are visiting in August and September, which I’m looking forward to. I’m anticipating that work will settle down after this month. I think I’ve worked almost every day this month, and I’ve been spending too much time on things that shouldn’t be my highest priorities. I don’t regret it: I’ve been learning a lot and doing things that interest me, but it’s time to refocus a bit.
More posts later…
I had hinted at this earlier, but now I’m definitely going to the CNN/YouTube Democratic debate in Charleston, SC on Monday. Should be a fun trip. I’ll try to blog about it and post pictures while I’m there.
Every time a mainstream blogger (that isn’t an oxymoron, is it?) talks about how interesting Facebook is, Facebook becomes less interesting.
“According to Apple Insider, just a year ago Apple’s share of the computer market was close to 2%. Now MacWorld and CNet are reporting that – according to NDP research – Apple’s Desktops have crossed 10% and the MacBooks now closing on 15% of the laptop market. This puts MacBooks in 4th place behind HP, Toshiba and Gateway.”
.. and for good reason. The MacBook Pro has been by far the best laptop I’ve ever used. In college I had Windows laptops from Dell, HP, and IBM/Lenovo. I still prefer linux on the desktop over everything else, but who knows.. it’ll be a while before I upgrade my desktop, anyway.
A [hilarious] collection of letters written by one guy to companies, and their responses. His writing is especially good… the page is a fun read if you have some time. My favorite part is when he wrote to a movie theater he had gone to… snippet:
I noticed that you claim to “guarantee a magical movie experience that exceeds our patrons’ expectations.” I did have a magical movie experience. But since I expected such, I have to admit that the experience as a whole did not live up to your guarantee. I therefore ask that you make good on your promise, and offer my friends and I complimentary tickets to the next show we would like to see. We want another magical movie experience.
Dolores Umbridge (from the new Harry Potter movie) looks a lot like Laura Bush:

I thought the movie was pretty good, by the way, though I haven’t seen any of the previous ones all the way through.
… courtesey of DEC in 1994.
My favorite quote:
“Same day service in a nanosecond world”
This is pretty funny:
….”Well, now, uh, Lancelot, Galahad and I wait until nightfall and then leap out of the rabbit taking the French by surprise, and not only by surprise, but totally unarmed!”
