beta4

Firefox beta 4 is out. I just installed it tonight and used it on my mac for a little while.. it’s been really snappy and usable so far. I’ve started running it on linux at home, and it works well, though the gnome-like theme looks worse than firefox 2 did, imo, but I can change that later (I use KDE). I really like the new look on OSX.

There are some bugs with the gmail keyboard shortcuts still, it seems, but other than that, everything has been working really well.

Release notes here.

Yeah, it’s pretty much the best beta ever. The PGO on Win32 made it about 10% faster. The turbo button on OS X helped a lot too (http://blog.vlad1.com/2008/02/28/finding-the-os-x-turbo-button/). I still have a few tricks up my sleeve, so we still might get even faster on OS X for beta 5.

Also, the awesomebar got some tweaks that make it delightful to use again. Specifically, the learning algorithm got better, it now gives priority to matching the start of words/domains, and it can match multiple words that you’ve typed in any part of the URL or title. I realized yesterday that I typed two words in a page title in the wrong order, and it still matched them just fine. Awesome!

Very cool.. looking forward to beta 5. Unfortunately I’m still on firefox 2 at work since my desktop doesn’t have gtk2.10, but my other machines are all switched now.
