I knew this from physics. Objects can be in three situations:

1) instable : imagine a ball rolling down the hill.

2) stable : imagine a ball in the bottom of a crater (half of a sphere). If the ball gets moved, it will return back to the bottommost position.

3) labile : imagine a ball on the top of a sphere. It is not moving now, but any slightest movement will set it moving and it will not be able to return to the starting position.

Ah, I see. It’s also used in psychology, too.
