Pragmatic healthcare reform

An article from The New Yorker advocates pragmatic healthcare reform, instead of trying to build an ideologically-pure system advocated by the right or left. My favorite quote:

Yes, American health care is an appallingly patched-together ship, with rotting timbers, water leaking in, mercenaries on board, and fifteen per cent of the passengers thrown over the rails just to keep it afloat.

The descriptions of the origins of European health care systems is very enlightening. The system implemented in Massachusetts (under Mitt Romney, I think) sounded pretty reasonable to me.
