Seth Meyers re: Michael Phelps

I haven’t followed the Phelps drama too closely, because it doesn’t seem to interesting, but this SNL segment on the subject was pretty good:

(video probably won’t show in Reader)

“Oh, and parents, if your kid says ‘Michael Phelps smokes pot, why can’t I?’, you should say to them ‘You can, right after you win twelve gold medals for your country.’”

The case for marijuana prohibition doesn’t seem particularly strong to me, especially in light of the laws for alcohol and tobacco. I wonder what the reaction would have been if Phelps had been caught on camera running a red light, instead. That’s also illegal, and is much more dangerous, but it doesn’t have the same social implications.

It is quite the tempest in a teapot, isn’t it? “Oh my goodness, a young male was seen smoking marijuana! Oh heavens!” Yeah, just like a large percentage of the rest of the population, how shocking. I did see in the news recently that Obama has said he wants to stop the DEA from raiding medical marijuana facilities where it’s been legalized by the states, so at least that bit of insanity should stop soon.

Yeah, that’s a start.. I don’t expect this to change much under Obama, though. Joe Biden was one of the big proponents of the War on Drugs ™.
