Mapnificient is a very good implementation of an interactive tool that I’ve wanted to have for a long time. Basically, you can choose a point in a city and map out where you can get to from there in a certain amount of time by walking or using public transportation.
For example, here’s where I can get to from my apartment in 15 minutes:

This is definitely a useful tool for apartment hunters. If you go to the settings, you can also configure it to allow the use of a bike or to generate a heat map of the transport times.

a.) this looks awesome.
b.) what’s that tiny blip on the other side of twin peaks? an L stop?
c.) this looks awesome.
Yeah, I was confused by that, too.. it appears to be a light rail stop http://maps.google.com/maps/place?ftid=0x808f7def836d5745:0x40193a7c3e0b0962&q=type:transit_station:%22Metro+Forest+Hill+Station%2FDowntown%22&dtab=0&sll=37.765339,-122.422928&sspn=0.006295,0.006295&ie=UTF8&ll=37.760571,-122.47005&spn=0,0&z=15
I was surprised that they were able the pull the data from COTA, the columbus transportation authority (Central Ohio if you want to be specific). When I first tried it a few days ago calculated distances for if you had a bike were severely underestimated. However, having just tried to use it again, the route times and distances seem correct.
Maybe they’re pulling the data from Google Transit? I can’t recall if there’s an API for that, but scaling to this many cities is a huge amount of work. I’d expect this to have launched with just one city if the transit systems were being handled one-by-one.
Fact!
Have you seen this: http://www.trulia.com/crime/#
They map out crime data in an area. It is impressive that they can obtain that data, although it is usually a few days old. I’m a big fan of visualizing data on maps.
This is an awesome mashup. The default “15 minute” setting is somewhat soul crushing when you’re looking at Los Angeles.
[...] I saw a link on a friend’s blog, and it was Mapnificent! Mapnificent shows you how far away things are from a given location on [...]
Barthol- I’m not sure if I’ve seen that one before, but I’ve seen similar in the past. I wish it were normalized by population to some degree. Some of the areas with more crimes seem to just be more crowded in general.
Andy- Yeah, for 15 mins it should just say “just stay at home”.
