Fox News outdoes itself

This is a few weeks old, but worth a look if you haven’t seen it already.

With the phone hacking story, it’s been fun to watch how Fox News and other Murdoch-owned outlets cover the story. Not surprisingly, Fox has been covering it a lot less than other networks:

The really amazing part, though, is when they do talk about it. As you hopefully know, the scandal is about “journalists” from News of the World hacking into the voicemails of celebrities, war widows and murder victims. But when this is discussed on Fox, they throw News of the World in with a list of other hacking victims. It’s masterfully orwellian:

Note how they gloss over the fact that the Pentagon, Citibank and Bank of America victims, but News of the World was a perpetrator. It’s all a whitewash. Don’t worry about the details!

The best part is that they spend the last bit decrying how there are important national issues that should be discussed instead, and then cut to the Casey Anthony story.

I’m not even mad about this anymore. FNC viewers get what they deserve at this point. Whatever.

I really like this data. I would also be interested in expanded data that measured the coverage of important political issues across networks. Just one look at the CNN.com versus FoxNews.com homepage can be telling. For example, at this moment, FoxNews.com has one headline of “Religious Groups Object to Paying for Birth Control” … I cannot find that story anywhere on the homepage of CNN.com.

Yeah, I’ve only seen this for large stories where vastly different coverage is suspected (like this one), but it’ d be cool to see more.

I don’t see that story anywhere on CNN.com either, but it is pretty old. It happened on August 1. The CNN article is here: http://www.cnn.com/2011/HEALTH/08/01/free.birth.control/index.html?iref=allsearch

With all of these comedy/ inspiration posts you may have inspired me to start writing again. I finally found a place where I can write (I used to write at the Borders near me— but you know what happened to them). Also, what happened to the Monday morning music posts??? C’mon now! ;-)

What’s your go-to spot for news? I almost always go to CNN.com first, but I have been rather disappointed by their writing. Both CNN and ESPN are two of my regular online news sources and both have their share of both fact and grammatical errors.

Glad to hear you’re writing again! Music will be back tomorrow, I have one lined up.

I tend to get my general “what’s happening” news from Google News, which shows a variety of sources. Outside of that, I rely on human aggregation of bloggers I trust (http://andrewsullivan.thedailybeast.com/ being the biggest example).
